THEY WROTE THEIR OWN BIBLE.
Let’s look at their ‘Bible.’
Gen. 1 : 1-2. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth proved to be formless and waste and there was darkness upon the surface of the watery deep; and God’s active force was moving to and fro over the surface of the waters.”
The ruach elohim (“Spirit of God”) of the Hebrew is interpreted “God’s active force” in order to avoid the Trinitarian understanding of the “Spirit.” (DENY THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD.)
JWs believe (and can provide scriptural evidence) that God’s Holy Spirit is not a person at all, but is a form of tremendous energy (or force) which can be used for creating, destroying, communicating, etc. See the HS study.
“And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, a first day.”
(An example of the evolution Bible which denies that God created the world in 6 literal days, around 6,000 years ago; not unique to JW’s, but still an improper translation of the Holy Word)
Since it is nearly word for word what the OT manuscripts (Greek and Hebrew) say, how is it an ‘improper translation”?
Zech. 12 : 10. “...They will look upon the one whom they have pierced...”
Here the Hebrew “look upon Me whom they have pierced,” in which God is the speaker, has been altered in order to avoid the implication that the one who is to be pierced (on the cross) is God. (DENY THAT JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.)
John 1 : 1. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god.”
Instead of the literal “the Word was God,” we have “a god,” which the sect interprets as “an angelic being.” (DENY THAT JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.)
John 8 : 56-58 “Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing My day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” the Jews said to Him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I shall prove to be!
(Changed from “I am!” the recognized Name of God as given to Moses. “I AM has sent you.” Exodus 3 : 14) (DENY THAT JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.)
Colo. 1 : 15-17. “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; because by means of him all OTHER things were created in the heavens and upon the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, no matter whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All OTHER things have been created through him and for him. Also, he is before all OTHER things and by means of him all other things were made to exist.”
Because the sect teaches that Christ was a created being rather than eternal God, the word “OTHER” is inserted several times. (DENY THAT JESUS CHRIST IS CREATOR GOD.)
Heb. 1 : 8. “God is your throne forever.” (a nonsensical statement) is put instead of “your throne, O God, is forever,” because this statement refers to Christ. (DENY THAT JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.)
That is only a very few of the hundreds of improper translations in the N. W. T..
But they must be the most important ones on your list. Which means the rest are even less honest than those above.
The New Testament does have some peculiar non-literal renderings. These are the result of the committee’s efforts to conform the version to the doctrines of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. “Jehovah” is given as a translation for Kurios (Lord) in the New Testament whenever the Father is meant, but NOT when it refers to Christ, the Son. This is the most widespread change in the Watchtower Bible : The insertion of the name JEHOVAH 237 times in the New Testament. Of course, it is appropriate for a translator to choose to use the divine name JEHOVAH or YAHWEH in the Old Testament where the Tetragrammator YHWH actually appears in the Hebrew text. However, the Watchtower has gone beyond this by inserting the name JEHOVAH in the New Testament, where it does not appear in Greek manuscripts. One need only look at the word-by-word English that appears under the Greek text in the Society’s own Kingdom Interlinear Translation to see that the name JEHOVAH is not there in the Greek. (DENY THAT JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.)
JW's have never denied the replacing of 'Jehovah' in the NT where it is indicated by quotes from and references to the OT manuscripts where YHWH is used. They have made it abundantly clear what they have done by a large section in the appendix of the NWT and footnotes for each instance of "Jehovah" in the NT.
This is one place where I would have preferred that the word "Jehovah" would have been placed in brackets, but with the footnotes and appendix so obvious, it is hardly an essential matter.
